The ZX Spectrum was a cheap home computer made by Sinclair Research (the guy that invented the pocket calculator).
It had VERY limited graphics and sound (very...), but was hugely popular because, for the time, it had large memory (48k), and a good fast, easy to learn basic which got many people into programming. Literally tens of thousands of games were made for the Spectrum.
The limited graphics and sound didn't stop the Spectrum having sometimes the best home conversions of many top games. Rainbow Islands is one, R-Type another:

Amongst the early games producers were a legendary company called ULTIMATE, which managed to produce arcade-quality games (at a time when the games were very primitive). Ultimate became legends in the Spectrum world, producing wonderful, wonderful games like Jetpac, Atic Atak, Sabre Wulf, and the technically amazing (for the time) Knight Lore.
Ultimate, you may or may not know, changed their name to RARE, and went on to produce games for the NES, and N64!
