Mario Paint Problem

Hi, i got Mario paint and am having problems using it. I own the real cart and it comes with a mouse, so i was guessing that the Mario Paint game would work fine... but it doesnt! is it possible to configure the rom/emulator to run with either keyboard or mouse? Please help!
