Congrats!

Just thought I'd swing by and wish a happy 10th. I try and check in on this place every few months or so, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't hold my breath for those 2-3 seconds it takes the site to load. I'm waiting for the day I just get an old "Server Not Found" message - and it'll surely come eventually - but I'm glad it's not happened yet. Congratulations Vimm, you've surely put more work into this site than most people do at their job, so be proud of that.
I still remember getting my first Windows-based comp about nine years ago for Christmas. Heard this crazy rumor you could download something called an "emulator" and play old games on it. Sounded way better to me than playing Doom. A quick Lycos search later, and I found this place, and in doing so, I found my childhood. Zelda, Final Fantasy, Crystalis, Castlevania... they were all here. This site is single-handedly responsible for more time spent staring at a computer than any classes I took at college. I'll still never forget the constant griping about your headers by those silly ROM collectors. They just never got it...
Keep on 'Preserving the Classics'. It's probably not the most thankful job, but it certainly has been worth it in this gamer's eyes.
Thanks for the support everyone. As I referred to in the news I've now moved and I couldn't bring the site with me. Since December '99 Vimm's Lair has always been hosted at either my or a relative's home, but it turned out that there was no longer any way I could get the bandwidth this site needs. I'm not willing to spend the money to co-locate my server, especially when it has been regularly crashing and needing a reboot, so it seemed like I had no choice. For the record, Vimm's Lair runs on a Pentium 3 - 933Mhz with 512MB of RAM. Believe it or not that's an upgrade from the original specs (533Mhz / 256MB) but it was hot stuff in '99, back in the golden days where banner ads could actually pay for goodies like that.
Despite not adding any significant content in several years I'm amazed that people still come here. Must've gotten something right, I guess. I've learned more than I ever imagined from this site, but now I spend 8 hours a day in front of a keyboard so it's not much fun to come home and do it some more. I've said before though that as long as people keep coming to the site I'm willing to keep it going as long as it's not inconvenient. To be honest, some of the outages have been intentional. Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep your WoW party healed with a 2000ms ping? It makes for a pretty lousy Priest so I'd sometimes pull the ethernet cord on the server.
Well, it turns out that there's a new technology called FIOS that I can get. I looked into it and it looked like it would work well, so I decided to sign up for it. So, it would seem that Vimm's Lair has a new lease for another year. To top it off I now have over twice the bandwidth as before so the question is, what do I do with it? My current thinking is to up the download speed, remove the daily limit, and add more download slots, perhaps in the form of Genesis? I hate to keep swinging the Genesis pendulum but I finally have the resources for it again, and maybe even more. I also really do have a rant for the front page that I wrote up a couple weeks ago but just haven't been able to get it onto the server. One of these days I swear I'll remember!
That seems like a much more fitting way to celebrate 10 years, doesn't it?
