I've had a similar crashing type of error during boss fights. When I hit a boss, the battle will fade out, then go to when I get the weapon. After that, it goes to the password screen like normal, but after the password screen, it takes me back to the intro (Highway) stage.

So at random times during play The screen will skip to the end of the level to where you get the new weapon... Strange stuff
