Does Crystalis have Save Locations? I did a quick load up of it on FCE Ultra and I couldn't find one right away, but I didn't play that long to really find out. If it does Not have Save Locations or you did not save the game at one, then there wouldn't be any data on the .sav file. You would want to use Save States (.fc0), which are better because you can save anywhere at anytime.
I did load Final Fantasy on FCE, saved it at the Inn and that seemed to load fine, which seems to indicate .sav files do work when it has a Save Location.
Another note, my FCE ultra doesn't seem to be putting the .sav files in the .sav folder, its putting them with the matching ROM. So maybe putting the .sav file next to the ROM will load your saved data. But I doubt it.
I actually have been saving all games to a folder on my hard disk. For some strange reason I can not access those saved games when I play later. The save file is there in the SAV folder.
