My guess

I think it is: Dragon Warrior 3.
Eight classes: Hero (you!), Soldier, Fighter, Merchant, Wizard, Pilgrim, Sage, Goof-off (clown!).
There was a tower midway through the game where you could change your class to whatever you wanted as long as you were level 20 (which you were probably very close to at that point). The "Sage" class could only be attained there, and only with a special item, but it was the best class overall (best spellcaster, decent combat).
Final Fantasy 1 has a point eventually where you become an improved version of your class. (From black mage to black wizard, for example) (Fire Emblem does that too, and I suppose a load of other games as well.)
Anything else you know?
Names of people, characters, monsters, towns,...
Names of weapons, armors, key items, spells...
Style of combat system (turn based? could you use magic? if so, how did it work?)
World navigation (any special transports, like a boat or flying machine?)
Important images (title screen, intro cinematic, event icons, sprites,...)
Unusual occurrences / any events that are fairly unique to this game (bridge from nowhere, teleportation machine, forest burns down, main character faints,... funny comments or actions, etc...)
I just got a new(ish) NES and am trying to remember the name of a game I used to play a lot. I remember it looked a little like the Dragon Warrior games (top down graphic view.) I also remember that you had many classes to chose from when creating your party (Not the Ultima games, already replaced those.) I also remember that there was a tower (or maybe several towers,) you could go to and change classes, or maybe it was just to change to an "advanced" form of your current class (also know it is not the Wizardry games - replacing those as well.) Beyond that, I just can't remember any more :( Any help would be appreciated.
