After the Funko/itch.io incident, I'm pretty confident that the "rights holders using AI scripts to send automated DMCA requests" is the most likely theory.
archive.org, or the r/roms megathread are great, and even then you can still use vimm to play the games on the web. Hopefully they'll come back to vimm because some people think the takedown emails were fake.
