Re: State of old school emulation

I do see a lot of retro enthusiasm living on in PCs, but in different avenues. There are many hobbyist programmers out there who still make retro versions of games from the Atari ST or Apple II. These games don't necessarily have much exposure, and it's not necessarily emulation; it's more like "imitation." I like the idea of being able to recreate my favourite shmups and platformers from the old NES days.
The way I see it, emulation appears to be more like one phase of the continuation of video gaming. It's an archival step; it will serve its purpose until technology has caught up with other methods of transferring the old games to new platforms, and I think the world has approached that horizon. Without knowing it or having that express purpose in mind, emulation sites like Vimm's Lair and Underdogs have become historical archives for the next generation of gamers (or whatever you want to call it).
Well-said, Vimm. Thumbs up to you yet again. :-D
