Duck Hunt (Virtual Console)

I don’t think Duck Hunt needs any introduction. The classic NES game that utilizes the NES Zapper accessory. In 2014, the game was rereleased for the Wii U Virtual Console. But how did they make use of the NES Zapper features? They modified the game by having a reticle on the screen at all times and using the Wii remote to control it to shoot the ducks. This version is not on this website. If possible, can anyone modify it to work on the NES with the Joypad in place of the Wii Controller?
