Smith always claimed that it was the angel Nephi who first appeared to him in 1823: "He called me by name and said unto me, that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Nephi."
The original 1851 handwritten manuscript of the Pearl of Great Price dictated by Smith reveals that the name was originally written as Nephi, but that someone later crossed out the name and wrote Moroni above the line.
Nephi was the one who took the plates to the americas a order by god when leaving Jeruselum. There are 3 books of Nephi in teh book of Mormon. Moroni was the one who buried the plates. It was then that the Angel Moroni who appeared to Joseph after the meeting with God and Jesus who guided Joseph the where the plates were buried. It was Moroni who took the plates away from Jospeh twice. The first time was because he lost the first translated 115 pages of the book but then was returned to him 3 years later when he was 17. The second because Joseph completed the translation of the book.
