Problems downloading?

I've been away from this site for several years and have returned just recently, only to find I'm having repeat trouble successfully downloading much of anything. Either my attempts to download timeout before they start or downloads in progress simply stop before finishing. I'm currently using WinXP and Firefox browser if that matters. Any suggestions?
