I've myself used xbox360 controller(not wireless one) with snes9x, ePSXe and PCSX2 (on winxp sp2). would assume it works with any emulator where you can set your keys by just pushing the button. The great thing about this is you can actually use the controller with your xbox360 too, or take it with you to your friend like I do :p Aaand it only cost like 5euros more than basic logitech pc pads.
I use Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2. Got it at Amazon for under $35. Not a bad controller, but the holes for the analog sticks are square rather than round and the overall feel isn't as natural as a NES or PS controller. There are quite a few brands and models; you may want to look at some reviews before buying.
I don't use their included "mapper", there's a program called JoyToKey that I use to map the buttons, when needed.
There may be adapters or modifications that allow NES or Playstation controllers to be used over USB, but I haven't looked far into it. Google around for info.
