In that case, I'd say you either need to re-install your graphics drivers, or DirectX is being a pain in the you-know-what. :-)
Have you updated DirectX lately? I know the latest versions have all sorts of software conflicts.

Thanks, but that didn't work either.
Actually it's not really the black squares that annpoy me the most, it's the fact that this computer used to be able to load the menu screen perfectly fine just a few months ago.
I could randomly download "some emulator" and "some rom" that I found "somewhere" and it would load excellent, but now I can't even get it to work by trying different emulators and roms.
If I were playing on another computer that I knew couldn't handle that kind of thing then it would be alright, but this computer seriously should be able to load this properly since it used to do it all the time before. <_<
