Project64 is the way to go. It's working great on my ass-old dell Inspiron 9400 just dandy.

I have the same problem with the emulator. Personally, I prefer using either 1964 or Project 64. You may want to give those a shot, as they may be more accommodating to laptop hardware anyway.
