"unlike those other games (Final Fantasy3, Earthbound, Robotrek, Dragonquest, etc) that throw up a generic background and auto-stage the fight for you while displaying the math (yawn)." Hehe. The type of game there you are describing is called an "RPG" (Role-Playing Game.) If you've tried one for more than a few seconds, you might like it. Most RPG's rely on a good story if you can get past the first couple hours. The only thing that comes to mind for the type of game you want is called "Blackthorne" for SNES. Its a combination of side scrolling action and strategy. It peridically gives you save codes as you progress, and its made by Blizzard. Otherwise.... um... Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and Contra III are as close as I can think of right nah. "o i c wat u did thar"

I'm blown away by the sound, graphics, and gameplay of Super Metroid, and love how you do real fighting, unlike those other games (Final Fantasy3, Earthbound, Robotrek, Dragonquest, etc) that throw up a generic background and auto-stage the fight for you while displaying the math (yawn). Can any of you retro gamers recommend an SNES game that's as good as Metroid, or at least close? Another tasty aspect of Metroid is that it's completely free of those tedious text conversations. Gods and Castlevania are close... are there others?
