You should also check out Cave Story. It's a PC game in made in the style of early NES and SNES platform games like Super Metroid. It's free and very fun to play, with interesting characters and concept.

I'm blown away by the sound, graphics, and gameplay of Super Metroid, and love how you do real fighting, unlike those other games (Final Fantasy3, Earthbound, Robotrek, Dragonquest, etc) that throw up a generic background and auto-stage the fight for you while displaying the math (yawn). Can any of you retro gamers recommend an SNES game that's as good as Metroid, or at least close? Another tasty aspect of Metroid is that it's completely free of those tedious text conversations. Gods and Castlevania are close... are there others?
