I know what you mean, but using ImgBurn makes that a non-issue. XP's native disc burning implementation is best avoided.

The way file copying works - for Windows, at least - is that it creates a temporary ISO representing the disc image in question, and then dumps that image to the disc. You'll need at least as much free space on the harddisk as each file takes up. So if you're trying to copy off a 1 GB file from your harddrive, you can't do it unless you have 1 GB of harddisk space free.

Also, the closer a file is to the tail end of the harddisk, the longer it takes to access the file.
