In it, you are basically an angel with a gun.  The first guys of the first level fly in a circle like that.  Eventually you kill a dragon to get into a temple (left-to-right scroll, side view) and meet up with the devil (you do this 5 or 6 times, in fact).

The Guardian Legend?
Its mostly a walk-around shooter thing, but filled with vert-scroll levels like you were saying.

I don't know, I'm just thinking of ideas!
Can you give us more specifics? (character design, weapon types, powerups, monster types/actions, bonus levels, etc.)

I'm trying to find the name of a game, it was the first game I ever played. It was a vertical shooter for NES, you are on the bottom of the screen shooting forwards (like Galaga) except you actually move with the screen (like Gradius) and there were hordes of enemies. All I can remember are these pink enemies that would come in groups and fly around in circles. I don't remember anything else except that it was really hard. I don't think I ever got past the first level...

If anyone can find what game I'm talking about, it would probably be the biggest nostalgia trip ever. I'll give you like a quarter or something.
