DSL is still several times as fast as Dial-up ... even if you're phone center isn't close by. But it was many years before my parents even took the Internet that far.
There *is* a speed worse than Dial-up, though; it's called Satellite. I've used this personally at a relative's house. Dial-up modems typically function at 56,000 baud. Satellite seems to run closer to 1,200 bad. I think that gives you an idea of what the speed is like. :-)
