Nonsense, in the winter it makes a lovely space heater!
Running a computer 24/7 does draw a bit of power, though a gaming rig probably chews more since the biggest hog nowadays is the graphics card. It makes most of the heat too (hence the enormous heat sink). A couple hours of Destiny 2 likely spews more power and heat than my web server does all day.
And you might not have considered this Vimm, and I don't mean to make you feel bad but only to point out the irony, but the server in your grandparent's house probably increased their a/c bill by however much you saved them lol!
