FF Paladin's quest?

Maybe you were mixed up with "FF Mystic Quest"
Anyway, there IS a game called Paladin's Quest (not Final Fantasy related). I think it's pretty neat, for the most part. There is magic, but no "magic points". You have two main characters, but can hire mercenaries to follow you around, and they come back for the ending. Unfortunately, everytime you advance the storyline, you have to save a town from lava or rain or a dragon or something. It gets a bit boring at parts, and confusing on how to advance, but once you go through the game a few times it's not too bad.
