...and it has cleared up the sound problem. And you're right, the graphics are better in all respects except one: even in the best mode I've tried they're still ever so slightly blurred.

I've not used zSNES before, simply because SNES9x has always seemed fine. I take your point about the difference in image quality (though I don't think it appears quite as stark as you suggest) and will probably try zSNES anyway, but I've set up the controls in SNES9x without the least difficulty.
