Blurriness is part of the effect produced by the 2xSal engines, because both horizontal and vertical pixels are doubled. Thus, the edges of lines are non-terminating and look less sharp. Personally, I like the way it looks. Super Eagle is the least blurry of the filters. There's also HQ3x in the newer versions of ZSNES, but it's a bit too extreme for me.

...and it has cleared up the sound problem. And you're right, the graphics are better in all respects except one: even in the best mode I've tried they're still ever so slightly blurred.
