Competent port overall. Nearly all the characters from the arcade game are present in addition to Rain and Noob Saibot being playable along with the bosses. There are other additions including Nightwolf's red shadow shoulder move and brutalities. The Genesis version features a exclusive port of the pong minigame which is called MK4. A negative omission from this port is that Animalities and Mercy finishing moves. Also some stages and voice clips are missing. There are more stages in this port than the SNES port though. The graphics are good and look quite close to the SNES version despite lacking in colors. The music is OK for the Genesis. Some finishing moves are also altered. Overall a good port despite some things being removed probably due to the cartridge size.

There exists a hack called Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy which actually restores some features in addition to adding new things so play that for a more complete port.

This hack changes palette data of some UMK3 characters to better match their arcade counterparts.

Changes for P1 sprites:
- Sindel's skin tone is slighty brighter now;
- Jade's skin tone is slighty darker (taken from Mortal Kombat II Unlimited - Enhanced Colors hack by Pyron);
- Cyrax was recolored to a more orange-tinted yellow (both for P1 and P2);
- Smoke has colors from his own VS-screen palette data (both for P1 and P2).


Changes for P2 sprites:
- Kitana's outfit color is turquoise now for better sprite distinguishing;
- Human Smoke was recolored to better match his MK Trilogy counterpart;
- Ermac's sprite was made brighter;
- Human Sub-Zero and Rain have darker outfits now;
- Stryker's shirt has more high-contrast red;

Also some VS-screens were redone.
