Game Description:
The first Sonic game. Sonic must free animals from their robot prisons and collect the chaos emeralds to defeat Dr. Robotnik.
Hack Description:
Silver Sonic Rise of the Death Egg is the pure-fun, pure-speed sequel of Silver Sonic The Revenge. Yes, a Master System sequel of a Genesis hack. ROM Hacking Magic Baby!!!
After somehow defeating Dr. Robotnik's evil fortress of pure kaizo chaos, Silver Sonic decides to take a well-deserved vacation on the Kirgony Isles, a tropical archipalego known for its peaceful nature, abandoned casino, and its ancient temples before Robotnik inevitably comes to try and take control of the islands to turn them into Eggman Land with the help of his trusty Death Egg.
The hack is a nice and fun SMS adventure and like its predecessor, attempts to be a bit harder than vanilla but not too much. And while its predecessor absolutely failed at this and just ended up as a big kaizo nightmare, this hack does it much better and while there are tough spots here and there and a couple of blind jumps in the opening zone, it is much more forgiving than The Revenge overall. The zones are colorful and memorable with 2 of them having brand new tiles, and the others being at least recolored to look cool like Scrap Brain being turned into a rave club of sorts, and Labyrinth being turned into The Hell Zone, (which was scrapped from the Revenge) the hellish lava level. (Aka a water level, but more ugly, and instead of drowning you just overheat and you collect magic bubbles that cool you down)
But it's not just the level design that got improved; The hack comes with a nice presentation, with extra goodies being included in the download like a custom JPN-style box art, a manual, full level maps and even the trailer parodying the Super Mario World vs Sonic 1 commercial. (These additional goodies, trailer aside, can be found on the official SHC website on both the original entry page in the Extra Public Downloads here https://shc.zone/entries/contest2022/621, and eventually be included with the download on the SHC Vault once the 2022 hacks are added.) And the hack even received the Spinball Trophy from both the judges and community in the Retro Category of the Contest for being the best entry using a game not commonly modified. Groovy!
So overall, the hack is much better than its predecessor overall so if you were looking for a good Sonic 1 8-bit ROM hack, you've found it.
Now, come have some fun!
