| Bound High is for me a standout on the small Virtual Boy library. I think undeniably the Wario game is the best on the Virtual Boy and as someone who has played most of the library, a lot of the games are either mediocre or just not captivating. Just because the library doesn't reinvent the wheel here doesn't mean there aren't a lot of really good titles such as this one.
Graphics: 8 For a Virtual Boy game being locked to only red and black is limiting but this game manages to make the most of it and really uses the 3d of the Virtual Boy to its maximum. I think if any game truly utilized the graphical capability of the Virtual Boy it was this. Sound: 7 The sound is no super Mario Galaxy or 64 or anything special like those but it's not as bad as it could be. The game sounds are pretty much as average as it gets. Gameplay: 9 This game is probably the 2nd best Virtual Boy game, debatably better than the Wario game. Personally I don't agree with that but I am slightly biased as a massive fan of the Wario titles. The simplicity goes a long way for this game and it's not a ground breaking idea but it's executed perfectly. You basically are a ball that bounces off of enemies to kill them and obviously the different enemies react differently. There are some levels that change gameplay a bit such as the level that has you put the squid like enemies (I don't know any names for them) in a hole that gives you random items. Overall: 8 Overall this game is really good. It has strangely addictive gameplay. It uses the Virtual Boy's hardware better than maybe any other game on the system. This game is never gonna be in the discussion for best game ever or anything crazy but for how limited the Virtual Boy was Bound High is what I'd suggest to someone for there first experience. The main reason is it shows a great experience with what's possible on the system. |
