I haven't tried it yet but I had this issue! it won't play on Nestopia and only Mesen for me. I'll try changing the sav to srm and see if that works! Thanks for telling us!

Assuming you're trying to play the official localized Anniversary Collection version, if you unzip the zip file you'll find that it comes with a .sav file.

Since the translated version ended up using more data than can fit in a typical NES ROM, the devs relied on placing extra data in SRAM and turning on the battery save bit in the ROM header to allow the game to read from SRAM as if had a save file. The game never writes to SRAM, it only reads from SRAM to get that extra data.

The in-browser emulators are not equipped to read this save file, which is why they fail to run the game. You can't fix this. For the Miyoo Mini Plus, however, you can rename the .sav file to .srm and then place it in the /saves directory of RetroArch, which should let you play it. It worked for me using the Mesen core on Windows 10, at least. I don't have a Miyoo to test with.
