Re: Dreamcast games no longer working with GD Menu

Vimm uses Redump to automatically verify its files. Redump has been in the process of switching over from GDI to BIN/CUE for a while now, and they are finally discontinuing GDI, meaning for Vimm to continue verifying its files, it will need to switch over to BIN/CUE as well. You do not need to redownload anything. GDI files work perfectly fine and should give you no issues. Redump is switching because the way they used GDI is a bit hacky and not officially supported by the GDI file format standard. They have also found that they can get more accurate dump records with BIN/CUE, capturing low-level disc details better. This is not relevant to those who just want to emulate games, though.

I hate to ask this, but could someone explain the situation with GDI files? I’m new to Dreamcast emulation; I downloaded everything from the Dreamcast section just a few days ago, and then I saw the announcement stating that GDI files are no longer included... so I’m really confused. Are they necessary to play the games or not? What’s the difference? I just checked all the files I downloaded—every single one of them—and they all included the GDI file, except for two games. But all the others did have that file, and as I said, I finished downloading them just a few days ago. Do I need to go through the whole process and download them all over again?
