I'm still having problems with huge black squares on the portraits when I open and close the menu, though - whenever I press Start to open the menu I see those black areas where the portraits eventually appear.
Does anyone know the reason for this?
I remember those areas used to be blue like the rest of the menu window before.

I know it's not a very serious problem, but I'm pretty sensitive to details and prefer the best quality in any game I play.

It looks like it's still there for me. If you look on the right side of the screen in the Vault, you'll notice there are now filter settings. Default filter settings does not list the Japanese games. click the box next to Japanese or run a search in the NES Vault for it.
