Game Saving Problem

I am having trouble saving games on FCE Ultra Emulator. The other night I was playing Chrystalis and I was doing well and getting very far. I saved my game when I was ready to quit playing. I went to play a couple of days later and I had to start at the beginning again because my game did not save. I opened the FCE Ultra main file and then opened the SAV file and I could see what I believe to be my saved game file. What am I doing wrong here?? Have I set something incorrectly??
