This game is one of many Nintendo titles that has stuck with me my whole life. I probably first played it when I was 7 maybe? And every year, some 18 years later, around Halloween I'll play it again. To me, the sequels can't compare. The most fun part of the game was exploring each room of the mansion, making it a house of the week in Luigi's Mansion 2 or a cartoonish Hotel in 3 doesn't have the same appeal. A major selling point of this game, and one I wish Nintendo would return to, is how fun it is to see all the details of each room and explore how the whole mansion fits together. In the later entries rooms feel lifeless and the layout of the locations makes no sense.
Graphics: 8 Standard GameCube 3D graphics for Mario games but I do have to commend the attention to detail on every piece of mansion furniture. When I was a kid I wanted to live in this mansion if it was cleaned up and cleared of ghosts... and still kind of do! Sound: 9 The soundtrack is iconic to everyone whose heard it and the detail of Luigi humming it to himself in the background as he explores is charming. The storm sounds, lightning, ghost sounds, etc all at once immerse you in this world. Gameplay: 7 This really is a game about exploring, nothing crazy about gameplay. I mean you fight with a vacuum, how exciting could it be? They try to remedy this in the newer titles but I think they fail. Adding gimmicks to the combat to make it take longer or silly takedown animations doesn't improve the base fact that you are just using a vacuum. And in the original that was fine, the main point of the game is exploration and admiring the locale. The gameplay being basic actually lets you enjoy the exploration more. Overall: 10 One of the best games ever made period. And one of the best on the GameCube. I put this right next to Skyrim, Mario 64, the original Paper Mario, COD Black OPs 1, Stellaris, Crusader Kings 2, and Jak and Daxter 1. To me, I don't compare genres, just how rememberable a game is and how often I replay it. I truly hope for Nintendo to give us another Luigi's MANSION one day. An updated mansion with the map size and graphics the new tech could give us would be beautiful. I'm sick of them turning this series into a copy of Mario with "levels". If you have never played this game I highly encourage you to experience it at least once. It's a certified Classic! |

I've beaten this game many times. It is one of the most interesting Mario spin-offs ever made.
Graphics: 7 For Gamecube, the graphics are solid especially during cutscenes. The paintings are pretty low resolution though. The first person mode allows you to look closely at the entire environment as well. The particle effects are good for Gamecube too. Sound: 10 The sound is honestly perfect for Gamecube hardware. Soundtrack is incredible, Luigi's whole array of sounds are great and have lots of tiny details, and ghosts sound awesome. This game is honestly masterclass in sound design, its one of the best sounding games I've ever played. This is not a game to play on mute or with different music, it's a sound based experience. Gameplay: 6 The gameplay is fairly average. The gameplay loop is essentially the same thing every fight; start sucking in the ghost and spam C-stick in the opposite direction that the ghost is fleeing. Most ghosts have one gimmick that, once figured out, makes them easy to fight. The game has a short story that completes after 4 chapters, with no different strategies really available. The post-game is a "hidden mansion" where Luigi takes double damage and deals double damage. The player does have runs graded for collected items, so first-time players will likely need to replay the game once for the highest grade. As such, the game offers little replayability. Overall: 8 If you enjoy great soundtracks and aesthetic games, I do recommend this game. It feels like a scary haunted house within the Mario universe, more than the other Luigi's mansions titles in my opinion. The gameplay is much better for a first time player because the puzzles are new to them, but in terms of replayability, the gameplay suffers. |
