Hi, I would like to talk about my favorite Paper Mario game.
Graphics: 9 The Graphics are great, especially for a GameCube game. These graphics still hold up today and with a little bit of upscaling, this game looks amazing. Sound: 8 This game doesn't have the best soundtracks in the series in my opinion, but there are some that are perfect and very memorable, like the Petal Meadows soundtrack and the X-naut fortress song that makes you vibe so hard. Overall the soundtracks are great but most of them are just good. Gameplay: 8 The gameplay is great, but it has an infamous Con which is unfortunately the backtracking that ruins the gameplay. The backtracking in Chapter 2 bothered me more than in Chapter 4 and 7 somehow. The devs try to make the chapters longer but execute it in a terrible way. Besides the backtracking I enjoyed all the Chapters except 2 and my favorite is Chapter 5. Overall: 9 I love this game and it's definitely the best in the series for me, it takes the Original Paper Mario and makes it better. I think a great example of this is like Galaxy 1 and 2, and while some people think Galaxy 1 is better, the Paper Mario 2 is 100 percent better. I hope the series returns to it's roots. |

This is a good Mario spin-off. Rather than a platformer, its a turn-based rhythm RPG.
Graphics: 8 This game's sceneries and graphics are quite good as it came about halfway through the Gamecube's lifecycle. It is cartoony but the game has a style that does it a lot of justice, and this is true for Paper Mario on the N64 and this entry as well. The paper aesthetic is charming for graphics. Sound: 8 The soundtracks are all really good and atmospheric. The sound of battle is entertaining as well, just about every action in this game has its own unique sound effect. Gameplay: 8 I disagree with the other reviewer. I find that, aside from main story annoyances, the gameplay is the highlight of this game. I will cover this game's infamous con first: backtracking. Many of the quests have a lot of backtracking, chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 all have necessary backtracking with an inefficient fast travel system. This is primarily a gripe for replayability though. The actual fighting is awesome. It replaces traditional turn-based RPG combat for a turn-based rhythm RPG combat that constantly has action. Rather than dodging attacks or dealing critical damage based on a percentage, the player must perform an action press at the right time to avoid or deal more damage. Mario, enemies, and all damage moves deal typically less than 10 damage, and have fairly low health bars. This makes math for attacks much easier than typical RPG combat where the player and enemies deal hundreds per attack and have thousands of health. Also, rather than have several stats, there are only three to raise: Health, Flowers(cast special moves), and badge points. Badges are a cool system because they allow for a lot of different strategies once you start to have a lot. There are also many challenging areas of the game so players do have to be fairly decent at the game to beat every boss. Overall: 8 This game is great. Its unfortunate that Nintendo has never repeated this Paper Mario formula. There is an indie spiritual successor, called Bug Fables, that is probably excellent(9/10). It improves fast travel, has barely worse sound design, and has essentially the same exact battle system. I would recommend it if you have played this title and want more. Nintendo please make another RPG Paper Mario! |

Mario needs no introduction.
Graphics: 9 Nintendo has always been great at turning the limitations of their hardware into features, and this is no exception. The paper premise allowed them to focus on making colorful and expressive 2D sprites and backgrounds, so the game looks phenomenal. There are only a few rough edges, a few textures that don't entirely work, that prevent this from being visually perfect. Sound: 10 The music is, as usual, fantastic. I especially like how the main theme is a reworking of the original Super Mario Bros theme. The sound effects are great, the limited voice acting really suits the mood of the game....it's all wonderful. Gameplay: 7 This, in my opinion, is where the game really suffers. The basic gameplay is fun, even for people who don't normally play RPGs. The battle system is highly interactive, so you're never just sitting back watching things happen. The crowd interaction and the scenery falling down offer more ways to keep you on your toes. However, in my opinion, most of the ways this game deviates from the typical RPG format are for the worse:
As a side note, your inventory is WAY too small. You can double the size of your inventory, which still isn't very much, and it doesn't come until so late in the game that it almost doesn't even matter any more. All that aside, little touches like the brief sections where you're playing as Princess Peach and Bowser are fun little diversions that add variety. Overall: 9 If this game weren't so fun to play on a fundamental level, there's no way I would have kept playing it. I'm not saying that I wish this game were more like other RPGs; I just wish it were more like Super Mario RPG. Not much more to say except that it's another great Mario game. It's familiar, yet different. It's approachable, yet challenging. |
