| Easily one of the very most misunderstood and underappreciated fighting games ever made. Not perfect, but a delight if approached properly.
Graphics: 8 Serviceable, unobtrusive, interesting, unique. I love the art style of this game. The character design is playful if not bordering on daft, to its own merit. The stage designs suit the style of game, with the destructibles littered around the stage giving you the hearts and sub-weapons. Each character has a special super attack, which always yields a stunning animation. The fun thing about this game is seeing all the interactions you have with the stage, all the hazards and such. Visually, nothing to complain about. Sound: 9 The soundtrack to this game RIPS. A lot of Castlevania tracks reworked and retooled to have a more symphonic metal flare to them works well in this game. The sound effects on their own are great as well, they add the suspension during battle to a great proficiency. Gameplay: 9 Hear me out: I'll start with the bad. The specials do indeed drain too much power, the camera has a bit of a difficulty curve to it (I know what you're saying, why should the game's camera have a difficulty curve? Well, keep reading.), some of the combos are hard to hit with the motion controls, and sometimes it's a bit difficult to manage the alternate/charged attacks. Now the good: Pretty much everything else. The actual fighting style is very fluid with the motion controls if you can get used to them. The most polarizing part of the game, but with a bit of time I found them quite easy to use. The sub-weapons are littered throughout the stage, and they're quite fun to play around with. I like the bat swarm the most, the one that drains your enemy's health over time. As for the problematic camera, once you get the hang of it there's not really much to overcome with it. It works just fine, especially since your characters automatically face each other even though it's a 3D camera. The battles are just so much fun, I really like the characters and find myself playing them differently each time I play the game. Most Castlevania fans find the character selection very irritating that there's some blatantly missed characters (Richter, for example) but I didn't really care. The fighters are fairly well balanced and it's just a lot of fun to play. Two player is a ton of fun as well, playing it with my friends was a total blast. Overall: 9 This game is simply wonderful to me. If you really put in the time and patience to learn the game's mechanics and overlook its lack of fan service to the Castlevania series, it's one hell of a fighting game. I recommend this game if you're not too deeply concerned with things like lore, if you're looking for a game you're willing to invest some time into learning the mechanics, then this is a great fighting game to play. Love this one. |
