| Donkey Kong Country Returns is a game that brings back the classic gameplay and atmosphere that we all know and love, but forgets that the reason why it was so classic to begin with is that it was one of a kind when it was initially presented.
Graphics: 6 The graphics are above average, especially for a Wii title. The art design is harmless enough, and the silhouette levels are simply beautiful, however I couldn't help but feel that there was more to be desired. It's almost as if the developers tried to take specific imagery from the older games and somehow "revamp" it, when really what blew us all away the most is the fact that it was never done before. DKC 1, 2, and 3 all had unique art styles that weren't done let alone possible before they released. DKC:R is simply a tribute. Sound: 7 Some of the retold sonic stories layered throughout DKC:R do the job just fine. Others feel shoehorned in. Not too much to complain about here, just wish it didn't try too hard to sound like the older games. Gameplay: 8 The game feels fluid and fantastic. A couple of the motion controls are a bit clunky, but they work in different areas of the game. The boss battles can be a little on the plain side, but when you factor in all the different ways to approach the gameplay as a whole it can reward you in more ways than one. By far the best part of the game. Overall: 7 This game is great for hardcore Donkey Kong fans as a means of fan service, but as a game it did very little to innovate. A fun game, but could have been far more. Had it went for a more unique art style and treated itself more like DKC4 rather than "hey, we know you LOVED the first 3, so we took everything we thought you loved about the first 3 and put it together like this!" then it would have been a far more enjoyable effort. I recommend this game if you're not too inclined on having a truly unique platforming experience like the first 3 were. If you're looking for something that's simply the Donkey Kong vibe and not as difficult as the first 3 games are, then this is the game for you. Fun game. |
