Dragon Ball Z: Buu's Fury. This game SHOULD HAVE been titled "Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku 3". I don't know why they forewent it (the THREE) and instead chose to go a different naming route, unnecessarily confusing and confounding us all, since this is the Third and Final game in the Legacy of Goku series on GBA. Regardless, the fact remains that alongside The Legacy of Goku 2, this is the BEST non-fighting DBZ game. PERIOD. Amongst the best GBA games, and even I would dare say, amongst the best 2D games ever made, PERIOD. Since this is a sequel to and extremely similar to TLoG2 (The Legacy of Goku 2), please check out my review of that game for additional context. There will be A LOT of comparing and/or contrasting of these two games.
Graphics: 10 Beautiful 2D sprite work. Just like The Legacy of Goku 2. For the GBA, this is as good as it'll get. Just beautiful. Extremely reminiscent of classic 16- and 32-bit 2D games. 3D IS USED for the overworld flying sequences. Gorgeous, in my opinion. A work of art. We got the best we could ever hope for. Sound: 10 Once again, just like The Legacy of Goku 2. Everything has been done up extremely well. Just like with the graphics, this is as good as it gets on GBA. The sound effects, music, everything. The only way it would be better would be with CD-bitrate quality sound/music and perhaps voice acting. But given the limited capacity of the GBA cartridge, this is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Gameplay: 9 Although the items and equipment have been improved since LoG2 (you actually have equipable equipment now[!] and items like food store in your inventory), and now there are random encounters on the overworld, AND the Super Saiyan power-up is better than in TLoG2, STILL, the gameplay is overall worse than LoG2. Why, may you ask? Two reasons. Reason one. They eliminated charged melee attacks. This reduces the variety and excitement of the combat tremendously. Reason two. They eliminated enemies bouncing off of the wall and phasing behind you (with a few invulnerability frames) when backed up into a corner. Why, Webfoot Technologies, why??? Combat is now more tedious, easier, and much more boring than in LoG2. This game is more grind-y than LoG2, which is fast-paced, action-packed, and furious. Buu's Fury is a boring grind-fest, being even further slowed down by the 1, 10, 100, etc. Ton Armband/Boots/etc. items which are necessary to gain EXP faster, but also slow your character down when using them! Yes, Super Saiyan helps offset this, but still, c'mon! Oh well. A blemish at worst. Overall: 9 Although not as good as TLoG2 (in my opinion), this game still is excellent. It did include multiplayer, a feature that Legacy of Goku 2 did not. Once again, it is still excellent as a game. I strongly recommend Buu's Fury to anyone looking for a solid action-adventure game with role-playing elements. There are too many turn-based RPGs on the GBA, in my opinion. We deserved more games like Legacy of Goku 2 and this. RPGs, or at least RPG-esque games, with real-time action, that can sort-of scratch that Zelda itch (if there were more puzzles and such in this game, it would SERIOUSLY be comparable to the likes of Zelda and other such similar games). Words can only do so much! Stop reading this review and go play these amazing games! |

This game is the most definitive dbz rpg on the GBA.
Graphics: 10 The graphics are very on par with the SNES, I'd even go as far as to say it even feels more superior than a SNES. Sound: 10 The sound is perfect, I really appreciate the fact that the game devs took their time when adding the OST from DBZ. Gameplay: 10 DBZ RPGs are very fun when done right, and this one was done way better than Legacy of Goku II. The style of RPG is just like Dragon Quest when fighting. There are characters that are only available at certain times to progress the story. This game is comparable to the actual anime. Overall: 10 The game was done so well that I consider it the best GBA game, let alone RPG, of all time. It follows the original story very well, has very awesome RPG elements, and is a stress free game at that. |
