This is without a doubt the best game about anthropomorphized suicidal arctic mammals you will ever play, and it stacks up well against games that aren't.
Graphics: 7 If there's anything the many clones over the years have demonstrated, it's that the graphics quality doesn't matter in this game. The solid gameplay is what keeps you coming back again and again. The SNES graphics are pretty decent as is, although there isn't much variety between levels from a purely visual standpoint. Sound: 7 The soundtrack is one of the more memorable features of this game, mostly because you've heard it all before. Every level is set to an arrangement of a folk song or well-known classical piece. Somehow, this fits well with the absurdity of leading hordes of green-haired rodents across vast caverns to their demise. Of course, all catchy game music eventually becomes grating. Just thinking of this game more than ten years later has gotten "Ten Green Bottles" stuck in my head. The sound effects get the job done. There are times when you need to rely on them to keep tabs on what's happening on the other side of the level, so it's fortunate that they're all different enough to distinguish. Gameplay: 10 Truly addicting, and arguably one of the greatest action puzzle games of all time. Figuring out how to dig, bash, and build your way to the exit is only half the challenge...Resource management and timing are crucial as you enact your escape plan. The level design is very clever; while there are very few new mechanics introduced after the initial tutorial levels, very rarely does the game feel repetitive. Overall: 10 Whether you can stand listening to "London Bridge" twenty times in a row or not, Lemmings is a unique and entertaining gaming experience that has stood the test of time. This game is guaranteed to bring out the sadomasochist in you. While some levels make you want to tear your hair out, there's something strangely satisfying about watching dozens of pixelated lemmings march obediently over a cliff into a pool of lava. It's a mental workout, and the premise is odd, to say the least, but it's well worth playing. |
