Mortal KombatII easily surpasses the original. Mortal KombatI was good but not great, however Mortal KombatII is. The combat was improved the graphics, you name it, they improved it.

Graphics: 7
The graphics were slightly better in this case. They were cleaner and crisper than the original, although I feel the graphics were improved I still would've like to see better.

Sound: 7
The sound in this game is also much better than the original. There are many crisp sounds like the punishing OOOOs when the player is nailed or the TOASTY head. The only thing I didn't like about the sound, was how incredibably annoying the sound can be if you have been playing the game for a long time.

Gameplay: 10
If you ask me, the gameplay couldn't of got any better than this. The game is challenging, but if it gets to hard the difficulty setting can be brought down making it easier. I was surprised as to how useful some of the special moves can be(Shang Tsung's Morphing etc.). The fatalities are much better i this game and there are plenty more people to play in this one. Plus Shang Tsung is a playable character, how cool is that.

Overall: 8
Overall a solid game, I would recemend this game to any fan of the original or fan of Street fighter. This game is one to pick up and is my favourite of the MOrtal Kombat series

Great game Midway!

Mortal Kombat 2 was easily the best of the Mortal Kombat series. A vast improvement over the god-awful original, Acclaim took the basic idea from MK1 but improved just about everything.

The graphics are excellent. The digitised characters are far more detailed than before and are more varied in their movements. Sub-Zero and Scorpion for example, moved exactly the same way in MK1. But in MK2 both hold different stances and move differently, giving them much more individuality. Although the backgrounds are a bit bland in places they do the trick.

The sounds are equally good, with plenty of clear and crisp "Uggh"s and "Oww"s. Scorpions "Come 'ere" sounds better than ever, and the "FINISH HIM!" bloke still sounds rather disturbing to me.

But the biggest difference was the gameplay. 12 very different characters, each with a whole host of special moves. However, where as previously each character had only one fatality, here each character has at least two, as well as a babality, friendship and "stage" finishing moves, (such as the pit and acid pool).

It's almost overwhelming trying to learn so many moves. The game is also much harder, (the original was a piece of piss) and the controls are far more responsive. The game is very fluid and fast.

It's also very funny! I can't remember how many times I laughed at that "TOASTY!" guy who pops up occasionally when you deliver a devasting uppercut. And the friendships are truly bizzare. I had know idea Liu Kang enjoyed disco dancing!!??
There's a big challenge here, and secrets such as the hidden bosses etc etc...

Basically, this game finally offered an great alternative to the unquestionably superb Street Fighter II. MK2 was a worthy rival. It didn't try to imitate; it was an excellent game in its own right.
