Mortal Kombat 2 was easily the best of the Mortal Kombat series. A vast improvement over the god-awful original, Acclaim took the basic idea from MK1 but improved just about everything. The graphics are excellent. The digitised characters are far more detailed than before and are more varied in their movements. Sub-Zero and Scorpion for example, moved exactly the same way in MK1. But in MK2 both hold different stances and move differently, giving them much more individuality. Although the backgrounds are a bit bland in places they do the trick. The sounds are equally good, with plenty of clear and crisp "Uggh"s and "Oww"s. Scorpions "Come 'ere" sounds better than ever, and the "FINISH HIM!" bloke still sounds rather disturbing to me. But the biggest difference was the gameplay. 12 very different characters, each with a whole host of special moves. However, where as previously each character had only one fatality, here each character has at least two, as well as a babality, friendship and "stage" finishing moves, (such as the pit and acid pool). It's almost overwhelming trying to learn so many moves. The game is also much harder, (the original was a piece of piss) and the controls are far more responsive. The game is very fluid and fast. It's also very funny! I can't remember how many times I laughed at that "TOASTY!" guy who pops up occasionally when you deliver a devasting uppercut. And the friendships are truly bizzare. I had know idea Liu Kang enjoyed disco dancing!!?? There's a big challenge here, and secrets such as the hidden bosses etc etc... Basically, this game finally offered an great alternative to the unquestionably superb Street Fighter II. MK2 was a worthy rival. It didn't try to imitate; it was an excellent game in its own right. |
