Mortal Kombat 3 was the first video game I ever owned. But even so, I must say that it is not my favorite in the series for a number of reasons. Mortal Kombat II beats it with a punch (no pun intended), and the first Mortal Kombat is defintely more fun. Graphics: 7 The graphics in this game are pretty good. The arcade and Playstation versions look better, but what can you do? Sound: 6 The sound effects are as good as ever, but I don't like the music in this instalation. Too "industrial rock" for me. I liked the more "Oriental" flair of the first two game's soundtracks. Gameplay: 6 The physics as a fighting game are great, the best in the series. But this game simply lacks the fundimental aspect of *enjoyment*. The new characters are lame, some of the old characters are non-existant (Where are Scorpion and Rayden?!), and the general atmosphere is just bland and uninspired. The only good elements to this game are the improved fighting physics and basically all the stuff hauled over from the first two. Overall: 6 A boring, tiresome addition to a great game series. Mortal Kombat II was a masterpiece, but this just shows that Midway just ran out of ideas and lost the "edge" with this release. MK3 is pretty sad considering how awesome MK2 was. Boring characters, mediocre gameplay, and new elements that just don't work. Ultimate MK3 was a lot better, but it stil doesn't quite get there. |
