| This game was one of the best WiiWare titles ever released. From its arts-and-crafts art style, to the hilarious sound effects, to the progressive difficulty (together with upgrade system), this game is a solid 9.2/10 in my book.
Graphics: 7 While the graphics aren't terribly detailed, the art style itself is noteworthy. For example, enemies include walking popsicle sticks with buttons for heads, and Pepsi-stylized bottlecaps with googly eyes adhered to them; and the “magic spells” include, amongst others, a ring cap (the kind used for a toy cap gun) that explodes, eliminating nearby enemies. Overall, the aesthetic reminds me of something from the Flash game era—oh, how I miss those olden days of yore!—and it shouldn't be surprising, since this game was literally a browser game before it became anything else. Sound: 8 Again, something that isn't technically impressive. The quality is something to be expected of a Flash game (see above), and there's nothing like sound occlusion in this game. Nonetheless, the silly sound effects make me laugh, including enemies' screams as I hold them in midair for extended periods of time. Gameplay: 10 This game is amazing. But even better is playing it multiplayer (with up to four players), since, aside from having a good time, enjoying this little game in each other's company, more players makes it possible to progress further than otherwise. So, if you have a group of friends to play this game with, definitely consider this game! Overall: 9 The gameplay being the most important factor to me into whether I like a game, I have to give it the most weight. For this reason, I give Defend Your Castle a 9.2/10. If you're looking for laughs, this is the game for you. If you like Flash games, this game is for you. If you're looking for fun with friends—even solo, for that matter!—this game is for you. Generally, if you're looking for a great experience, this game is for you. |
