| Do you know what I feel one of the most annoying things is? It's when you are given a task in an extremely vague manner, and are expected to execute it perfectly. There are no hints, no clear communication. You just have to read the mind of the person who gives you the task, apparently. This is what the last mission of this game feels like.
I've had a long going feud with this game ever since I was a child. In this game, you are playing a girl who gets a job at a style boutique, and is tasked to make accessories, such as hats, bags, purses, bracelets, etc, etc. The further you progress, the more different kind of accessories you'll be able to make, and the more annoying the game gets. Graphics: 4 At a first glance, the graphics might not seem that bad. But the more you play, the more ugly it gets. The first thing you'll notice is that the accessories that you are tasked to make look horrendous. This especially applies to the bracelets. I get angry just looking at them. The most difficult part of the game is truly making a bracelet that looks like a human being would even lay their eyes on them. I guess you can make earrings and rings look nice, but you only unlock rings at the very end of the game anyway, so what's the point? Why make your best accessory (gameplay and look wise) the one that you unlock the latest? Absolutely disgusting. Another complaint that is a bit hard to see at first, is the characters. After having played this terrible game after multiple years, I came to notice something. The character models are all the same. It's just all different hair colors, and sometimes different eye colors. But a lot of the models of the "irrelevant" customers tend to appear twice! This makes it extremely hard to tell characters apart, and leaves nothing special to them. None of the characters look unique or memorable, since they're all just a copy + paste of each other. But, all in all, this is still a DS game. As much as the copy and pasted characters might annoy me, I have to admit that they don't look bad for a DS game, they just look boring and empty, just like the entire game. Sound: 5 Well, I'd say one of the things that this game managed to do at least decently is the soundtrack. It's bearable, and the music that plays when you open up the game has stuck with me for years (not in good way though). The Sound that the characters make when talking is absolutely horrendous though, and the game feels very awkward since there's no music playing at all while you are doing your task, but that's just a personal preference of mine. Gameplay: 1 Now, here we get to the heart of this review, the reason why I wrote it in the first place: The absolutely atrocious thing that this game likes to call "gameplay". I'll start with the worst thing. When you have to make an accessory, let's say a bag, purse, (or later on) phone case, or anything like that, you need to cut the fabric first. You do this by dragging your stylus along a line on the bottom screen, which isn't inherently a bad idea. What makes it so bad though, is that sometimes, out of nowhere, the scissors start shaking, making you mess up the cut having to start all over again. Another disgusting thing about these scissors, is that, even when you are moving along the line perfectly, sometimes the line will just go red, indicating that you went off track and messed up the cut. This, alongside the absolute terror to anyone's ears that is the stupid cutting sound the scissors make, made this one of the worst things in this entire game. Next, I'll talk about making necklaces in this game, the second worse gameplay mechanic. Generally, I remember liking the necklaces when I was younger. Nowadays, I would like to time travel back in time to know what the f*ck I was thinking. So, you can pick the parts of a necklace yourself. You have a wide variety of options that all honestly boil down to the ugliest parts you've ever seen, but anyway, some of these don't have holes, meaning that you have to drill them in, so they can be put through a string to become a necklace. Drilling these holes creates dust. You have a limited time to blow the dust away, which you do by blowing into the microphone. This is a creative idea, but unfortunately, it doesn't work. You have to blow into that stupid mic with all the power you have for this to maybe work. It never works! And I confirmed that this is not a hardware problem, since I've tried this game on my brand new Nintendo 3DS new xl when I was younger. The third and last point I want to make about the gameplay, is the one that I find most aggravating. Mission 9. What is mission 9? It's basically the last level in this game, and so forth the hardest. What makes this hard, is that you have to execute the orders of the customers perfectly, even though the customer is being extremely vague. It feels like back in school, when you had to analyze a 300 year old poem, trying to figure out what the heck the author is trying to convey, but worse. When you finally manage to interpret this order, it always ends up being wrong. You don't get any hints. And even if the message seems easy to interpret, it's always the exact opposite. For example the second order by random_forgettable_customer4298 in mission 9 is a hand bag. She says that she wants an elegant handbag, that can carry a lot of stuff and is simple in design. Yet, when you try to finish this order, and literally just follow the exact instructions, it still ends up being wrong. Do you want to know what this "elegant and simple" handbag order looks like when made correctly? For me, it was a hot pink bag with hearts on it. Definitely not what I would define as "elegant". And this happens through the entirety of chapter 9! In fact, I don't even think I managed to finish the game when I was younger, because the last mission is borderline impossible! And don't get me wrong, I can appreciate hard games, but this is not "difficult" it's annoying and doesn't make any sense. Overall: 2 Overall, this game is just nauseating. None of the orders make sense, the gameplay is aggravating, none of the characters are memorable and are all extremely one dimensional. Adding all of this up, I'll give this game a 2/10. If it weren't for the rings, this would be a 1/10. That's it! Thank you for reading through this long, hissy review. I absolutely recommend you don't play this, as it's nothing more than a waste of time that could be spent playing good games. But, if you are one of these fellows that still decide to play the game, I'll let you know that I photographed the finished orders of the more annoying customers. I'll keep this up to date on the following reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/user/raaay_art/comments/yqp9jm/lets_play_fashion_designer_ds_guides/ Hope you enjoyed reading this review, and changed your decision of downloading this random game you found on here! PS: the reason why I had to redownload the game on here, is because at some point when I was younger, I had my first heated gamer moment and threw the cartridge out of my window during a thunderstorm. It fell into a hole on a construction site. |
