This game is a diamond in the rough. A hidden treasure, buried in the past. Great characters, baffling translations, fantastic music, B-C-tier VA work, gripping story, and unique combat all come together to make a game that was lost to time.
Graphics: 9 It's not perfect, but this game came out at the end of the PS1's lifespan so the Dev's knew the consoles limitations intimately and they made use of everything that old gray rectangle could put out. Don't be surprised if you find yourself stopping regularly to appreciate the amazing prerendered backgrounds. Sound: 7 Here is the sticking point for most people who play the game, the VA work sucks. Ain't no two ways about it. The voice acting is either funny bad or just bad-bad. However, the music is, at worst, good, and at best, amazing. There are so many certified bops that I cant list them all! Gameplay: 9 The combat of LoD is, at both times, simple and deep. All you have to do is master the addition system and you can beat the game without anything else. No magic, Dragoon form, or farming needed. However, if you do have issues with additions, the game has a variety of options to empower you to overcome the game's challenges. Magic is most effective against its opposites like Pokémon, Dragoon form has much higher offense and defense stats, magic items are plentiful (maybe even too plentiful), and defending heals you of 10% of your max hp while halving incoming damage and preventing you from acquiring negative affects like poison. What's crazy is, the game just keeps going... Special items that have crazy powerful boosts, rare enemies that drop tons of gold or xp, optional bosses... etc. And, again, to beat the game, you really only need to get good at mastering additions. Wow. Overall: 8 My final score would probably wind up around an 8.5/10. A great game, the kind I can go back and play anytime and get some enjoyment out of. If you haven't given it a shot I highly recommend you do. It's a fun game with lots of lore and a well though out cast of characters to explore that lore with. Have fun and remember Meru is best girl! Final thought: Sony, why have we not had a prequel to this yet? WTF is goin on? |
