Fatal Fury is a fighting game series which has been around for quite some time now. Dating back to around 1992 or so, when SNK was making Fatal Fury/KOF games for the Neo Geo. Fatal Fury was a great series of games on the Neo Geo, but Wild Ambition (Garou Densetsu in Japan) for PSX just doesn't have what it takes to put up with the latest fighters of the 21st century.
Graphics: 7 The graphics tend to be grainy and slow, but 3D rendering of the characters looks pretty nice. The backgrounds (especially the floor tablets) could use some serious work. The FMV's in this game are great, but they simply don't help improve the actual game's appearance. Sound: 6 Typical fighting music, but the voice-overs are at their usual low. Ever since I first played Fatal Fury, I remembered it for it's monotone, scratchy voice-overs. The announcer sounds tired and ill. Gameplay: 7 Again, it's a fighting game. Choose your fighter and beat everyone else. Play with either Terry, Andy, or Joe, and you will fight Geese as the final boss; while playing with Geese or Billy Kane makes you fight Terry Bogard at the end. I unfortunately did not beat the game with everyone else. Not enough characters. Overall: 6 Wild Ambition should have been taken back to the drawing board and tweaked before it was brought out to the Arcades so gamers disappointed by the giant steps back that was taken with this title. Even though there were plenty of cool features, the good *did not* outweigh the bad in this particular case. The control in FFWA is pretty good, but basic. Rather than having multiple punch and kick buttons, you have one of each. Since this is a 3D fighter, you can now rotate to avoid holds/throws. |
