| A milquetoast walk down memory lane.
Graphics: 7 Considering 1997 was a year in competition with the Popeye arms associated with Final Fantasy 7, the graphics here have somewhat held up over the years. Certainly the faceless characters can be slightly off-putting but overall not half bad. Sound: 6 Not bad but not great. The soundtrack, like the game, can be a bit repetitive especially the fight music. You get stuck in a long battle with some regular enemy who won't stop blocking and you'll end up muting the sound. Gameplay: 7 There are some great aspects of this game: the save points incorporate healing, the magic system is simple and easy to figure out, rotation of the game camera makes it easy to not miss anything. Voiced anime cut scenes are well drawn. Then there are the cons: battle is clunky and super repetitive, a bland selection of weapons at a time when your competition is FF7, Final Fantasy tactics, Breath Of Fire 3 and so on. These games beat some monotony by just giving you tons of gear to play with. Granstream does not. It's a pretty barebones cut and dry selection. The cost of items is stupendous compared to your ability to farm in-game currency. It is also really easy to get locked into an area you don't have enough consumables to make it through. And the leveling system is arguably the worst part of this game. Having a hard time making it? No grinding for you. You only level at certain parts in the story. This basically makes fighting enemies, outside of boss battles, almost completely unnecessary and unrewarding. There is no sense of growth from it. Overall: 7 For what it is they did a slightly above average job making it. Everything is just kind of all right. Nothing great. Just... ok I ain't mad at it. It just feels like it was rushed through development so it could hit the market in time to compete for that hot late 90s PlayStation RPG market. My play through took me about 25 hours. The story is ok. The names are pretty generic. All in all if you haven't played it, it can be a fun one. But you probably won't play it twice. 6.5/10 |
