| Classic WWE fun! While I am not as fond of the PG era as I am for the Ruthless Aggression and Attitude Eras, this entry in the SVR series is still incredibly fun and easy to pick up and play.
Graphics: 5 The graphics are rough. It's based off of the PS2 version which already had pretty mediocre graphics, but being a PSP game it's even worse. The wrestlers themselves look kind of nice but the rest just looks like a very early PS2 game. Sound: 8 While the menu navigation sounds are of lower fidelity to their home console counterparts, the rest of the sound design is still there, with brutal sounding hits, a rowdy crowd, and even the little details like the referee telling a manager to get out. This version is missing commentary though, replacing them with the wrestlers' theme songs, but you can turn that off if you like. Gameplay: 9 As per the SVR series, this entry features great gameplay. However, since the PSP only has one analog stick you revert to the original Smackdown grappling system where circle acts as a modifier button, allowing you to perform grapples. This is nice for fans of how Smackdown 1 through SVR2006 played, but I prefer the right-stick system. Otherwise gameplay is great, with the ability to do virtually anything you want. Grab a chair from under the ring, ask for some water from the crowd, go to the top of the stage and smash your opponent into the big WWE logo, it's literally just a big sandbox (as long as you're playing no DQ matches). Overall: 7 Overall, SVR11 for PSP is a great package that combines all the fun of the PS2 version into a handheld entry. You do miss out on some features, such as Superstar Threads, the paint tool, Havok physics for weapons, and small details like post-match FMVs and logos, but the core gameplay is still incredibly fun. If you want a more complete WWE experience for the PSP, check out SVR07 or WWE All Stars. |
