Comix Zone is a must have! You are a young man making his way through a comic book fighting all types of creatures. The animation in the game is awesome and there are a lot of fun surprises on your way.
Graphics: 10 The animation is sharp and detailed many things in the environment are interactive. For the time it was done it impresses me. Sound: 8 The music is fast paced and up beat but depending on how many times you die can get to be a little repetitive. Your toon emotes for things and there is no shortage of the 1966 batman sound effects. Gameplay: 10 I have not played a game I enjoyed this much in a while. I played the game as a young man and am playing it again now even though I've been here before there are still many surprises waiting on me. Overall: 9 The game presents a challenge and a whole lot of fun. If you think comic books are static think again. A must have for any gamer! It is a very well made game. |

I first played Comix Zone at a friend's house on their Gensis. At the time I wasn't very good at it, but I thought it was a fun game to play.
The premise is pretty straight forward. You play as a comic book artist, Sketch Turner. The story begins as the villian materializes in Sketch's studio. The villian, Mortus, is still ink and paper. In order to make himself flesh and blood he needs to kill Sketch, but he cannot do it in the real world. So he banishes Sketch to his own comic book to be destroyed by his own creations. So the game plays out as you battle Mortus' minnions with the assistance of Gen. Alyssa Cyan, who communicates with you from headquarters. I believe the game came out in 1995, so it is a late Genesis game that makes use of the newer 6-button controllers. Here is a breakdown of different areas of the game. Graphics: 8 The graphics are pretty good when compared to other Genesis games. The whole comic book aspect lends itself to pretty awesome level layouts and animation. Though the graphics seem ancient compared to the PS2 and Xbox this is to be expected, I mean the Genesis was only a 16-bit system. Sound: 10 It is not so much the actual sound effect that are excellent as is the music. The music fits the action well and that is pretty important. There is a jukebox option under the options menu so you can listen to all of the music tracks. The sound efects aren't bad either. Gameplay: 9 The gameplay is really fun. You fight enemies in a hand-to-hand (claw, tenticle, paw, etc.) combat although there are items that can be thrown at enemies too. Strategy is the key when fighting, sure you could keep mashing the attack button and but you would waste energy. There is some problem solving involved. Overall: 10 I like this game. I offers something unique that you usually won't find in games nowadays. The comic book setting is pretty cool and interesting. I haven't beaten the game but I imagine it to be shorter than most games are now (because there are no save points) the game is meant to be played straight through (memory cards sure have spoiled us). If you are into unique side-scrolling games be sure to try this one out. Unfortunately, it is only one player so those of you looking for multiplayer games can still try this one but it won't support any friends. When I first played this game at my friend's house I thought it was pretty fun. I couldn't get very far into it because I was a horrible player, but it kept me occupied. Have fun! -Rammier |
