| Puyo Puyo Tsuu is a competitive puzzle game for one or two players on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. In my opinion, it might be one of the best puzzle games on the system and maybe even in general. The game has a lot to love about it that makes me feel like the game trumps both it's predecessor and it's western reskins (i.e. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine or Kirby's Avalanche) at nearly everything.
Graphics: 9 In terms of Graphics, they may not seem crazy at first glance, but the sheer amount of detail that's gone into the backgrounds, character mugshots, and the Puyo themselves make it clear the developers spent a lot of time making sure the game looked as good as it possibly could. Character mugshots are detailed, lively, and vibrant, with neutral, winning, and losing animations to tie it all together. The backgrounds are nice to look at so you aren't staring at a void while fighting an opponent or in practice mode. Overall, the graphics are very good for the good ol' Mega Drive/Genesis. Sound: 8 In terms of sound, the music alone is wonderful. All of the game's tracks are a pure joy to listen to. Sound effects are also pretty good, from the sound of popping a set of 4+ Puyo to the sounds that play when you get a REALLY good chain that make you feel super powerful. Voice clips, on the other hand... They're good, but quite compressed, meaning they don't sound the best quality-wise. Granted, this is a side effect of porting a game made for the SEGA System C-2 Arcade hardware to the Genesis, as such hardware had more space to put voice clips on than a Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge. They also interrupt the music whenever they play. You can set the voice clips to a lower quality to play them WITH the music untouched, but... why would you want to do that? Just stick with the default quality, it sounds better and you can live with minor interruptions, can't you? Gameplay: 9 This is the best Puyo has ever been. The gameplay is pure Puyo Puyo rules with some new twists that have affected the games to this very day. The most important of which is being able to offset or even reflect an opponent's nuisance Puyo. Being able to escape an attack or at least ease the damage taken is a feature that makes the game much more bearable compared to Mean Bean, Kirby's Avalanche, or the original Puyo Puyo -- especially when you can essentially give yourself another chance with enough skill whereas you can't in the aforementioned games. If all of the games that released after this one kept the rules introduced here, then you know they've struck gold here. Overall: 9 Overall, Puyo Puyo Tsuu is one of the best puzzle games on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and one of the best entries in the Puyo Puyo series in general. The amount of effort and game-changing rules introduced in this game make it so much better to play compared to the first game and it's reskins and it'll keep you coming back whether you play alone or with a friend. Seriously, play this game if you like puzzle games or you liked Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. It's the same gameplay you know, but 10x better in nearly every front. |
