Hi, in this review I will talk about one of the games I like the most, mainly as a DBZ fan.
I think the game is mainly directed towards DBZ fans though, since as a fighting game alone it may not be pretty good, but as a DBZ game, it's literally one of the best you can find out there. Also, I will cover this up later on, but there is people spreading misinformation about the game, saying that this is running at 60fps on the PS2 and the Wii version is at 30fps... that's not true, both are 30fps, in fact, the Wii version has a more stable frame-rate while also having faster load times and a higher resolution and graphics! I will cover this in the Gameplay and Graphics section. Graphics: 7 For being a PS2 game, the graphics are good, even for today I still feel the characters models to be good (of course, they can be way better on modern hardware, but if you look at them, they are not a bunch of bad textured triangles hitting each other, they look good enough to feel like you are really playing as Goku for example.) The scenarios and the rest also looks good, and the graphical effects of the Kamekameha, charging auras and the rest looks pretty decent, they are a big step up compared to the charging aura from BT2 for example. In terms of resolution, PS2 renders at 448i and the Wii version goes for a full 480p presentation. When converted to progressive scan, the PS2 version looks something around 228p in resolution. There also are some graphical effects that this version does not have, one example is when you blow up a planet, the animation on the PS2 lacks smoke and the actual planet being destroyed, it just flashes a big explosion and that's it. On the Wii, you see how the planet is slowly being destroyed when the explosion happens. Sound: 8 The sound area is great, the effects sound nice and the voice of the characters are good. I usually play modded versions of the game, so I think I dislike a bit the original soundtrack since I'm used to play with songs I like more, but that is just personal taste, the game sound overall it's pretty good. Gameplay: 7 When I talked about the game not being very good compared to other fighting games, I don't say because the game core mechanic itself is flawed, but rather because I feel there are unnecessary characters in the roster. One example is the Saibaman, which doesn't really add much since they are irrelevant after saiyan saga, besides, those "generic" characters doesn't have interesting or exclusive techniques on their own. Regarding the 60fps lie, I don't know where this came from, but you can easily tell just by looking closely that the game is not 60fps. If you need help, there are some people that recorded gameplay with AI interpolated frames and managed to get footage at 60fps. Put it at 480p and you will see the game running normally, as always at 30fps. Put it at 720p... and well, you tell me. Now it's 60fps, and in no way the PS2 version runs that smooth, this is backed up by some modders from the BT4 project. Overall: 7 As a DBZ game, it's pretty good, my favorite one actually surpassing games like FighterZ and Xenoverse in my opinion. It's a shame that they didn't continue the saga since it has lots of potential with the new consoles (Like better environment destruction, improved clothes destruction, body damage, maybe improved scenario changing where if you hit so hard an opponent you send it flying to space and battle there... bigger scenarios, maybe timed transformations... man, there are a lots of possibilities to try.) I really hope someday the saga to be continued, it's the game that was the closest to make me feel I'm actually in a DBZ fight, the other games are not bad, but it just didn't feel the same to me. Thanks for reading it! It may be subjective in most things (except the technical part, the Graphics, FPS, and resolution are a fact), but overall I don't feel the game is overrated. Other games like FighterZ may feel better than this as an actual fighting game, I will not deny it, but it just doesn't give the DBZ fights vibe... not sure how to explain it (also, I don't like much the animations of FighterZ, the characters look really choppy and feels like they were rendering their animations at 15fps or so, I would understand if it were running in a Sega Dreamcast maybe, but for today's standards, it feels weird to me.) |

So.. I'll just get straight to the point. It is a good Dragon Ball game, with a lot of characters. It isn't perfect, but certainly better than a lot of fighting games coming out. It has some pretty funny secrets, but it has a lot more than just gameplay. But I'll shut up on this part and move on.
Graphics: 7 For a game that came out on the PS2 in 2007, the graphics are still good. While they aren't anything like Cyberpunk 2077 or... Cyberpunk 2077, they are still bearable, and sometimes, even kind of pleasant to look at. There are a few graphical secrets, but you will hardly find them so it isn't worth mentioning them here. Sound: 9 The soundtrack has some pretty bopping songs, but just a small amount. The sound effects are INCREDIBLE and like it or not, the English voices aren't bad. But that's just my opinion. Gameplay: 9 The gameplay is repetitive, but, it can still be fun. It isn't supposed to be hyper-competitive, it is supposed to be more flashy and like the anime. Some characters can be really fun to play around with, like Arale. It isn't trying to be Melee 2, but rather its own thing. Overall: 8 Overall, it is a pretty good game. If you want, try it out. You can always delete it later. It has a wide range of characters, and the upgrade system is actually pretty fun. Like one of the other reviews said, if you want to play around with some of the broken characters, just search up Red Potara codes on GameFAQs and have fun. This game also runs at 60fps on the PS2, but only 30 on the Wii, so choose your version wisely! |

Ah yes, the most overrated Dragon Ball Z game of all time. For whatever reason, everyone seems to unconditionally love this game and completely ignore all of its flaws, so I decided to review it myself, as fairly as possible.
Do keep in mind that this is just my opinion on the game, so don't take it as a fact. Graphics: 8 The models are a bit spiky, but they're fairly detailed and look pretty good for a PS2 game. The stages also look nice and are pretty faithful to the show, so a 8/10. Sound: 7 The sound quality and voice acting is pretty good, whether the music is good or not is subjective, so I won't comment on that. A 7/10 for the sound. Gameplay: 4 And here is where the problems are, the combat. Most people praise the game for its inclusion of "over 150 characters", but they overlook the fact that only about 30 of them actually had any effort put into their attacks, the rest just getting generic moves such as: "High-Speed Rush", "Full Power Energy Ball" and "Super Explosive Wave". Plus they all have the exact same playstyle, with no unique mechanics to separate them from the rest of the cast. The story mode is decent and covers most of what happened in the show, but it feels like a step down from Budokai Tenkaichi 2, changing from the overworld design to a menu where you directly pick the levels. You can also customize characters and give them items to make them stronger, some of which are small stat boosts like "Attack +3" and others cause bigger changes, such as the "Flight" item which allows non-flying characters to remain mid-air instead of slowly floating back to the ground. As for the other game modes, they're fun, but just small variations of the duel mode, so not much to say about them. Overall, the gameplay gets a 4/10. Overall: 5 A great DBZ "sandbox", but an mediocre game in general. I'd recommend you check out the game if you just want to mess around with random characters, but if you're not a big DBZ fan and are just looking for a fighting game, you should probably look elsewhere. One of the game modes allows you to input passwords to transfer customized characters to different saves. Some of these passwords generate characters with broken dev items that make them almost invincible, if you want to check some out just look up "DBZBT3 Red Potara Passwords", there's also a guide on GameFAQs that explains them with more detail. |
